5 Car Washing Mistakes That Are Destroying Your Paint
Your Car Wash is Damaging Your Car
We see it every day at our studio — cars with beautiful paint underneath dozens of micro-scratches caused by improper washing. Here are the 5 biggest culprits:
1. Using a Single Bucket
The biggest sin. When you dip your wash mitt into a single bucket, you're picking up dirt particles and rubbing them back onto the paint. Always use the two-bucket method — one for soapy water, one for rinsing the mitt.
2. Roadside "Cloth Wash" Services
Those ₹200 roadside washes use rough cloths, dirty water, and harsh detergents. The result? Thousands of micro-scratches (swirl marks) that dull your paint over time. These are only visible under direct sunlight but devastate your car's gloss.
3. Washing in Direct Sunlight
Water evaporates too fast in sunlight, leaving mineral deposits (water spots) that can etch into the clear coat permanently. Always wash in shade or early morning.
4. Using Household Soap
Dish soap, surf, or any household cleaner strips protective coatings and dries out rubber seals. Use only pH-neutral automotive shampoo designed for clear coat finishes.
5. Drying with a Regular Towel
Cotton towels are too rough for automotive paint. Use only microfiber drying towels (at least 400 GSM) or a filtered air blower for a touchless dry.
